Children’s Classes:

Sensei Abrams brings a wealth of experience towards teaching children’s classes. He has substantial experience working with children. He has coached children’s soccer and is also a New York State licensed psychologist with pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training in child psychology.

Children learn the same curriculum that the adults learn. The atmosphere of the classes is child friendly while helping children to develop the necessary skills to successfully defend themselves, even against adults. The severe, almost militaristic atmosphere that is seen in some martial arts schools is absent here. The learning atmosphere is positive, balancing children’s needs to be playful, while learning serious subject matter.

This dojo will accept children from first grade on up. Rare exceptions can be made, but only on a case by case basis. Parents can also train with their children, during the children’s class, but only after having received permission from Sensei Abrams ahead of time.

Adult Classes:

Adult classes are taught on a principle-based curriculum. The proper execution of certain Genkido skill sets will be used to illustrate certain fundamental principles that enable Aikido to work. The attacker (uke) is a teacher. The attacker must attack with sincerity in order to help the Nage (person receiving the attack) learn how to execute techniques properly. The pace and speed of the training is kept at a level that allows people to learn how to execute techniques without becoming unstable and/or excessive physical force. This type of training demands a high degree of honesty among the students so that they can all help each other learn
